Spiral States Success

A South Coast Sail won the Spiral States at Jervis bay in March 2016.   Shane Connolly sailing 804, a twenty year old boat with a seven year old South Coast Sail sailed well in difficult conditions to win,  proving that not only are South Coast Sails fast, but they also last.

South Coast Sails filled the first four places in the 2016/17 Nowra Marathon.

Merve Lotze, using a South Coast Sail 290 series on his Spiral, won the Great Grand Masters division in the Spiral Nationals in January 2014.  The 290 series cost $290!

The website.   There is nothing fancy about this website, as you have probably noticed!  I do not aim to have a fantastic website – in fact my whole pricing philosophy is to strip out overheads as much as possible to reduce the price the customer pays, so I have done this at the minimum cost. However,  I have included some interesting musings on sail shape and care of your sails – so read on….

South Coast Sails is a very small operation located at Gerroa on the NSW south coast – about two hours south of Sydney, and has been operating since 1976.  I make South Coast Sails in my loft at home so I do not have the overheads of a normal commercial business, and the customer gets the savings.  It also means I can pass on some of the savings by using the best cloth available for the job in hand.  I do not have to cut corners with my inputs to keep my prices competitive.

My philosophy for South Coast Sails is to make fast sails that will last as long as possible by using the best cloth for the application in the heaviest weight practicable (or allowable in some class restrictions,) and all of that at a very affordable price.  I warranty South Coast Sails for the practical life of the sail.

I specialise in Dacron working (i.e. not spinnakers,) sails for dinghies, trailer sailers and smaller yachts, although I have done laminate sails and many sailboard sails.  I also get to do a lot of sail repairs and some recuts.   I have also done some larger orders for sail training organisations, including Youth Works at Port Hacking, and Crusaders at LakeMacquarie.  In fact Crusaders got so used to seeing South Coast Sails Australian Swift symbol, they adopted a similar logo!

I sail a Spiral Dinghy,  (www.spiralsailing.org ) and have built a large number of Spiral sails, and have also developed the 5.6 sail for that class over more than a decade.  Although I do not sponsor top sailors to use my sails, my sails have won both the Spiral Grand Masters and Junior divisions in recent years, so they are fast.  (In the Sail Sydney Regatta in December, Glenn Hammond, using one of my sails had two wins out of four races in the Spiral Division.)  South Coast Sails Spiral sail offerings start with the 290 series which cost $290 and run to the Premium series at $450.  Full sized sails can be cut down to a 5.6 for $65 to $85 depending on the work involved, or new ones can be made for $270.
